- UX LEADERSHIP
Fast tracking team process improvement
Creating a series of guilds to provide team development pathways and improve team processes.
MY ROLE:
User Experience Manager
Problem
To enhance the overall UX practice, with the limited resources a small team presented, I proposed a collaborative approach that enables the team to collectively contribute towards the improvement of UX practice at Nintex.
Traditionally, such initiatives were undertaken by only a few members of the team, moreover, relying solely on the management to drive improvements resulted in longer lead times to implement team improvements.
UX Activities
Four main areas of focus were identified to drive team improvement.
- Accessibility – Responsible for educating designers, and engineers, and providing guidance and recommendations back to the business. Conducting Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPAT) reviews and external accessibility communications.
- Design System – Design system components and UI Kit custodians, responsible for component review process, and component definitions.
- Process improvement – Develop processes and templates to help designers deliver solutions quicker and easier.
- Research practice – Develop processes and templates to improve the overall team research practice.
Outcomes
The primary benefit was our ability to drive four initiatives concurrently as a team and implement process improvements in a more timely manner. Some of the other benefits of the program included:
- Opportunities for team members to develop leadership skills through rotating as the guild chair.
- Guilds take ownership of creating quarterly OKRs and tying these back to corporate objectives.
- Individual designers have a key learning area where they can focus their professional development.
- Team ownership of practices and processes.
