UX MANAGEMENT
Transitioning from a centralized UX practice
We needed to overhaul the team’s structure to enhance communication and optimise project delivery.
MY ROLE:
User Experience Manager
PRODUCT:
Problem
As I grew my design team from a solo designer to a team of eight, we faced challenges in supporting our Product Managers and Engineering teams. While a single funnel for processing incoming work and directing it to an available resource was effective for a small team, it became an inefficient practice as our team grew.
Practice improvements
I collaborated with the Director of Product Management and the Engineering VP to establish a more streamlined integration between the three contributing teams – UX, Product Management, and Engineering. The goal was to foster closer working relationships and promote stronger connections at all stages of the product development lifecycle.
Outcomes
UX designers have greatly benefited from having increased visibility of future roadmaps, as it has allowed them to contribute more effectively.
Additionally, tighter communication cycles and overall clarity between working groups have facilitated a move away from a hand-off model, with trios now moving through more stages of the product development lifecycle together.
This has resulted in a single UX touch point for Product Managers and engineers providing streamlined answers to UX-centric questions.
